Alfred Lee Gusler, 89, of Hollidaysburg, died peacefully surrounded by family on Monday evening at home.

He was born in Duncannon, and spent his boyhood in Marietta, PA, where he enjoyed the adventures of living along the Susquehanna River. He also had past residences in Florin (Lancaster County), Halifax (Dauphin County) and more recently in James Creek (Raystown Lake area.)

Survivors include his beloved wife, Beverly (Snader); 3 daughters Joan C. Stehman and husband John of Hummelstown; Mary Ann Boyer and husband Vaughn of Millersburg; Nancy K. Horvath and husband Nicholas of Harrisburg; and a son, Gregory and wife Kathy of Carsonville.

Additional survivors include: 12 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-granddaughter.

Al was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Patricia McConnell; and two brothers, Charles and Lane.

During the years 1946-48, Al served in the US Navy aboard the USS Cadmus, a repair ship out of Norfolk, VA. Al spent his time on ship designing and machining specialized tools that were not available on the ship.

As a young boy during WWII, he learned his trade under Paul Wine, who owned a machine shop in Marietta, PA. He also received great and kind support from Mrs. Gladys Waller, a caring neighbor and several of his school teachers. He was forever thankful to them.

Al was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, boating, and hiking. As a young man, he was an expert in target shooting. He could repeatedly blast away white thumbnails from a distance of 100 yards.

Al was an accomplished pilot of small aircrafts. With wife Beverly, he enjoyed attending the famous, “Fly-Ins” at Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Al was the owner of Plant Technology, Inc., an interstate business specializing in steel fabrication and erection of concrete manufacturing plants. It had a sterling reputation in the industry.

In his passing, Al’s family would like to thank Hospice for its loving care and the members of their church, Martinsburg Grace Brethren, for its long-term support during his illness.

Friends will be received from 10am until noon, Friday, April 14, 2017 at the Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church, where a funeral service with military honors will follow at the church, Pastor Brian L. McCall officiating.  Private interment will be held at Entriken Cemetery, Huntingdon County.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Al’s name be made to Camp Mantowagon, P.O. Box 95, Saxton, PA, which challenges youth and adults to follow Jesus.
