Martinsburg, formerly of Woodbury

Arlan D. Barkman, 93, of Martinsburg, formerly of Woodbury, passed away on July 7, 2024 at Homewood in Martinsburg. He was born on April 22, 1931 in Woodbury; son of the late Lester Carl and Alma Ruth (Boor) Barkman. On May 17, 1951 in Winchester, Virginia, he was united in marriage to Dolores J. (Pepple) Barkman.

Arlan was a Woodbury High School Class of 1949 graduate. After graduation, he went on to play professional baseball for the New York Giant Organization. Arlan served his country in the Army after being drafted during the Korean War. He was part of the 15th Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion - 7th Infantry Division in the Pork Chop Hill - Old Baldy Area on the DMC. Arlan retired in 1996 from the family business, started in 1931 by his father, Barkman Oil Company, Inc.

He was a member and deacon of the Woodbury Church of the Brethren and member and Past Master of the Woodbury Lodge, No. 539. Arlan served 12 years on the Northern Bedford County School Board of Directors, 33 years on the Nason Hospital Board of Directors, 11 years on The Village at Morrisons Cove Board of Directors, the New Enterprise Bank Board of Directors, the First National Bank of Everett Advisory Board, and was president of the Woodbury Cemetery Association. He received the Lions International Foundation Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Services.

Arlan was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores on June 5, 2022 and a grandson, Alex Barkman. Surviving is daughter, Michelyn Hatch (Richard J.) of Martinsburg; son, Dirk Barkman (Marcia) of Martinsburg; son, Lance Barkman (Tammy) of Roaring Spring; grandchildren, Dr. Kiel Barkman, Kella Boyer, and Logan Barkman; as well as 4 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received on Thursday, July 11, 2024 from 9:00AM until the 11:00AM funeral service at the Homewood at Martinsburg - Bice Memorial Chapel; Pastors Jerry McCuller and James Neatrour officiating. Interment will be in Dry Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions in Arlan’s name may be made to the Dry Hill Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund.
