Betty Mae Harclerode

Betty Mae Harclerode, 81, of Woodbury, PA, went to be with the Lord on Monday 21 September 2026 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born in Roaring Spring, daughter to the late Malcolm F. “Mac” and Marie L. (Cogan) Drake. On December 23, 1963 at the Clover Creek Church of the Brethren, she married G. Wayne Harclerode. She is survived by her husband; two children: Dwayne M. Harclerode of Altoona, and Elizabeth M. Bithell (husband David) of Woodbury; two grandchildren: Rachel and Ian Bithell; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her seven siblings: Robert F., Donald E., Benjamin L., Ronald D., and Edward P. Drake, Martha Jean Harclerode and Bonnie I. Clark; and her dogs Susie and Romeo.

Betty was a 1962 graduate of Central High School. A year later, she attended the Altoona School of Commerce. She was employed as an elementary secretary for the Spring Cove School District for a couple of years prior to the birth of her children. She was then self-employed for several years for housecleaning and babysitting services. Betty attended the Altoona Bible Institute in 1972 and received her evangelical teacher certificate. She had been a Sunday school teacher for several years at Foot of Ten Bible Church as well as a member of the church choir. She also supported the Awana Club for many years so children around the world would be able to hear the gospel about Jesus Christ.

Betty was a former volunteer for the Southern Cove Fire Company Ladies Auxilliary, Nason Hospital snack bar, and banquet chair for the NBCSD Band Parents. She served as the Woodbury Borough Judge of Elections for nearly 30 years.

In 1990, Betty completed home health aide training. She was employed as a Home Health Aide for Home Nursing Agency for 20 years prior to her retirement in 2010. “The mission of the Home Nursing Agency was dedication to the highest quality of customer service delivered with a sense of warmth, kindness, and individual pride.” Betty went above and beyond for her patients as well as her employer. This dedication was recognized through patient satisfaction surveys and by the Home Nursing Agency administration. She received the Glenda McGuire Hands & Hearts Award in 2004; this award is presented to a Home Health Aide who reflects warmth and care in the services he/she provides, as well as loyalty to the Agency.

     She kept in touch with her immediate and extended family; she faithfully sent birthday and Christmas cards on a yearly basis. Betty enjoyed reading and studying her bible, and traveling which included trips to Alaska, Hawaii, Texas, Florida, Europe, and the Caribbean islands. After her retirement, Betty enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and grand-doggies, as well as her dog Romeo.

Friends and family will be received on Sunday, September 27, 2026 from 1:00 pm until the 3:00 pm funeral service at the Fink and Stone Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Martinsburg, PA, with Pastor Tim Guyer officiating. In lieu of flowers, monetary donations to John’s Way Medical Equipment Ministry, 137 Church Hill Lane, Martinsburg, PA 16662 would be appreciative.
