Charles L. Smith, 97, of Martinsburg, formerly of Woodbury, passed away on March 15, 2025 at The Village at Morrisons Cove. He was born on January 12, 1928 in Woodbury; son of the late John O. and Margaret M. (Smith) Smith. On May 10, 1953 in Roaring Spring, he was united in marriage to Betty L. (Sell) Smith; together they spent 69 years until her passing on March 24, 2023.
Charles was a Class of 1947 graduate of Woodbury High School. He was a life-long dairy farmer; a farm spanning 5 generations. Charles was a member of the Waterside Church of the Brethren and a founding member of the Southern Cove Power Reunion. He enjoyed working in the woods and sawmilling, hunting, attending auctions and sales, and collecting antique tractors.
Charles was preceded in death his wife, Betty; a son-in-law, Wayne Ritchey; and a brother-in-law, Donald Rettburg. Surviving is children, Cheryl Pote (Joel), Kenneth L. Smith (Karen), Sharon Friedenberger (Max), and John H. Smith (girlfriend, April) all of Woodbury; grandchildren, Shawn Pote (Katie), Jessica Douglas (Brad), Jodie Case (Matt), Ryan Ritchey, Jenna Smith, and Hailey Smith; great-grandchildren, Ryan, Leslie, Terry, Ty, Hayden, Myah, Tyler, Jordan, and Kylie; 4 great-great-grandchildren; step-grandchildren, Kristen, Mark, and Tawnya Claypoole; 5 step-great-grandchildren; sister, Anna Mae Rettburg of Martinsburg; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received on Friday, March 21, 2025 from 4:00-7:00PM at the Stone Funeral Home in Woodbury and Saturday, March 22, 2025 from 10:00AM until the 11:00AM Funeral Service at the Waterside Church of the Brethren; Pastor Eric Poteat officiating. Interment will be in Dry Hill Cemetery. If so desired, Memorial Contributions in Charles’s name may be given to the Waterside Church of the Brethren.
