Charles R. "Chuck, Butch" McGeary

     Charles Russell “Chuck, Butch” McGeary Sr., 85 of Roaring Spring passed away Saturday, August 22, 2026 as a result of a battle with cancer. His family was by his side when he drifted off to be with the Lord. He was born to the late Joseph E. and Roxie P. (Leaper) McGeary in Altoona, on December 18, 1940. Chuck was raised in the Logantown area of Altoona and attended and graduated from Altoona Sr. High School in 1958.

     He is survived by his wife Barbara of over 50 years, daughter Debbi K. Miller, son Charles R. “Butch” Jr. and wife Sandy, step-daughter Kimberly A. Medaras, brother Joseph (Gene) E. and wife Rose, sister Judith A. Hancock, and sister Sharon L. Newton and husband William. He also leaves behind many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

     Chuck was drafted and entered into the U.S. Army in September 1959. During his military career he served tours in Korea, Japan, Germany, and Vietnam. In addition, he had numerous assignments within the continental United States. He retired from the military with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4 in July 1983. His many medals and awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service, Korean Service, Vietnam, Armed Forces Expeditionary, and Army Commendation.

     Upon retirement from the military, Chuck took a position with the federal government working for the U.S. Readiness Command and later the U.S. Special Operations Command, both being at MacDill AFB in Tampa, FL. He retired from the federal government in February 2006 after more than 20 years federal service.

     Chuck was a Legacy Life Memorial for the VFW Post 43, in Martinsburg, where he served as the Quartermaster for many years. He attended the First United Methodist Church, in Hollidaysburg, where he was an usher for numerous years.

     Friends will be received from 10:00 am until he 11:00 am funeral service on Friday, August 28, 2026 at the First United Methodist Church, 801 Allegheny St., Hollidaysburg, with Pastor Paul Bottenfield officiating. Interment at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg with full military rites conducted by the U.S. Army and the Blair County Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or the American Cancer Society.
