Charles I. Mountain 92, of New Enterprise, passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2026 at the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center, in Altoona. He was born in Everett, a son of the late Amer and Oma (Detwiler) Mountain. He married June A. (Whetstone) Mountain who preceded him in death on October 22, 2021. He is survived by four children: Barbara Thomas and husband John, of New Enterprise, Karen Davidson and husband Jim, of Bedford, James Mountain and wife Celeste, of New Enterprise, and Kimberly Rodgers and husband Steve, of New Enterprise; 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, and a sister Ruth Downey.
Charlie was a committed member of the FFA in high school, and adored his mentor, Luther (Red) Rahauser. He worked as a mechanic in the army and later at Eastern Trucking, Bedford. His passion was farming which he began in earnest in the late 60’s. He loved animals and was leader of the first Southern Cove Swine Club in the New Enterprise area. He was a true believer, believing each year that if a crop was poor, God would help him have a better crop the next. He loved Jesus, his family, church family and community.
We are grateful for special caregivers, Connie Ochoa, Sue Miller and Betty Sweinhart, along with several family members, in the years after our Mother’s death. On Feb. 6, 2026 he was moved to the VA Hospice floor and was again treated so wonderfully by staff. All were saddened by the loss of one so gentle, humble and kind. We are forever grateful that our dad, an army private and longtime farmer, was cared for as a five star general at the VA Medical Center.
Friends will be received on Thursday, October 22, 2026 from 1 until the 3 pm funeral service at St. John’s Reformed Church, in Loysburg, with Rev. Dr. David Meckley officiating. Interment at the adjoining church cemetery, with Full Military Rites conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to the St. John’s Reformed Church, 1678 Woodbury Pike, Loysburg, PA 16659.
