David "Chuck" Johnstone

David (Chuck) Johnstone passed away peacefully at UPMC Bedford Hospital on Thursday, November 28, 2024 with his loving wife of 63 years, Betty, and his beloved daughter, Jill and her husband Chris by his side.

Chuck and Betty (Ebersole) were married at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in East Freedom, PA on September 22, 1961.

Chuck was born in Portage, PA on January 14, 1939, the eighth child of John William and Effie (Ritchey) Johnstone. In addition to Betty, he is survived by his brother, Francis (Butch) and his wife Linda as well as the following grandchildren, all of Charleston, SC: Jordan Flynn (David), Alexander, and Kendall, and a great-grandson Liam Grady Flynn (six months), whose pictures and videos gave him great joy. Preceding Chuck in death were his parents and siblings: Edward (Agnes), Eleanor (Fred) Kreutzberger, Delilah (Dee) Williams (John Robert), William (Roberta), Robert Eugene (deceased as infant), Richard (Thelma), Joanne Branson (Robert), and Mary Lois Geis Patterson.

Chuck was a 1957 graduate of Greenfield-Kimmel School District and served in the US Army from 1957-1959. He also had an Associate Degree from Penn State. He was employed as a mechanical engineer at Kennametal and Burlington Ind. in Virginia. Chuck was a very active member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Dutch Corner. He enjoyed golfing, wood working, and pen and ink drawing.

A traditional Lutheran funeral service will be held at 1:00PM Saturday, December 14, 2024 at Messiah Lutheran Church (741 Messiah Church Road, Bedford, PA 15522) presided by The Reverend David L. Wright. Following the service, there will be a Celebration of Life Visitation from 3:00 - 5:00PM at Christ Lutheran Church (206 Walnut Street, Claysburg, PA 16625).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lutheran World Relief (P.O. Box 17061, Baltimore, MD 21297-1061), the Bedford County Humane Society (182 Bohn Road, Bedford, PA 15522), or a charity of your choice.
