Donald R. Johnson

Donald Roy Johnson, 89, of Martinsburg, passed away Saturday morning, February 1, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family, following an extended illness.
He was born in Roaring Spring, son of the late Samuel Leo and Edna M. (Keith) Johnson. On August 10, 1957 he married Joan M. “Jo” Ellenberger in Hollidaysburg. She preceded him in death on March 25, 2019 after 61 years of marriage.
Surviving are a son, David S. Johnson (Linda) of Maryville, TN; three daughters: Brenda L. Johnson and Sharon L. Ayers (Mike) both of Martinsburg and Leah J. Ross (Steve) of New Wilmington; eight grandchildren: Cole Johnson (Tonya), Jena Johnson, Zane Johnson (Danielle), Lucas Johnson (Faith), Janelle Spencer (Joseph), Benjamin Ayers (Taylor), David Ross and Mike Ross; six great-grandchildren: Maddox, Brielle, Addison, Remi and Lenny Johnson and Preston Spencer; a brother, Kenneth S. Johnson (Nancy) of Martinsburg; and two sisters-in-law, Carol S. (Nicodemus) Johnson of Duncansville and Sally (Ellenberger) Keefer (Bud) of Harrisburg.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Harold E. Johnson and Russell W. Johnson; and a sister, Nancy Joan “Jo” Johnson.
Don was a 1953 graduate of Roaring Spring High School and also served in U.S. Navy Reserves. He was employed for 44 years at Appleton Papers Inc., Roaring Spring, where he did various jobs including, a lab technician and material handler.
He was a member of Memorial Church of the Brethren, Martinsburg and was raised in the First Church of the Brethren in Roaring Spring. Don was a member and served as past president of the Martinsburg Sportsman’s Club.
Don loved spending time with his family, especially at their hunting camp in Artemas, Bedford County. He also enjoyed hunting, being outdoors and traveling.
Friends will be received from 10 until 11am, Friday, February 7, 2025 at the First Church of the Brethren, Roaring Spring, where a celebration of life service will begin at 11am, Pastor Dave Crumrine officiating. Private inurnment will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg. Arrangements are by John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg.
