Elsie A. “Mike” Hinish, 81, resident of Elmcroft of Altoona, rural Duncansville formerly of Martinsburg, passed away Saturday morning at Elmcroft after an extended illness.

She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late John E. and Gladys M. (Cartwright) Dirrigl.  She married Joseph L. Hinish on February 20, 1954 at Raven Run Church of the Brethren, Saxton.  He preceded her in death on March 23, 2012.

Surviving are a daughter, Jo Joseph (husband, John) of Duncansville; 2 grandchildren: Jonathan and Rachel Howard (husband, Micah) all of Pittsburgh; 2 sisters: Barbara Perino of Ocala, FL, and Patricia Leiken of Aurora, OH; a brother, David Dirrigl of Ashtabula, OH; and several nieces and nephews.

Mike was a 1951 graduate of Altoona High School.  Following  graduation she began working at Universal CIT, Altoona and then was employed at H.D. Blattenberger, Martinsburg and Wineland I.G.A, Martinsburg as a bookkeeper.  Mike retired in 1992 as head teller from M&T Bank, Martinsburg the former Mid-State Bank.

She was an active member of Memorial Church of the Brethren, Martinsburg where she sang in the church choir, and was a member of the Homebuilders Sunday School Class.

Mike was a long-time member and past president of the Martinsburg Business and Professional Women.  She was the former treasurer for the Memorial Park Summer Rec. Program, volunteered for the Salvation Army and The Village at Morrisons Cove Auxiliary, where she was instrumental in the creation of the Gift Shop and Snack Bar.

She enjoyed baking, singing, dancing, traveling, was an avid reader and loved animals.

A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg, Pastor Joel F. Nogle officiating.

The family prefers memorial contributions be given to her church or the Martinsburg Community Library.
