Emma Jane (Sleighter) Hinton, 94, a guest at The Village at Morrisons Cove, Martinsburg went home to be with her Lord, Wednesday evening at the home.

She was born in Manns Choice, Bedford County, daughter of the late Howard Daniel and Ruth Emma (Hoenstine) Sleighter. On January 25, 1942 she married William L. "Bill" Hinton at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, East Freedom. He preceded her in death on July 11, 2013 after 71 years of marriage.

Surviving are a son, William R. Hinton (wife, Marcia) of Hollidaysburg; a daughter, Sandra Hinton (husband, Jan Dunlap) of Greensboro, NC; three grandchildren: Autumn Strauss (Steve), Sean Creedon, and Amber Gordon (Terry); 4 great-grandchildren: Regan, Delaney, Bailey and Mason; special nephew, Stan Lehman of Altoona, who was raised in their home; dearly loved best friends, Bill and Donata Dively of Hollidaysburg; a sister, Donna Eckman of Hollidaysburg; a sister-in-law, Ruth Hinton Hoover; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Sleighter; and two sisters: Shirley Delozier and Irma Snyder.

Emma Jane was a 1941 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School. She began her work career at Sylvania, Altoona in 1944 during the war effort, where she retired in 1986 with 42 years of service.

She was a longtime active member of Memorial Church of the Brethren, Martinsburg, where she was appointed deacon emeritus, served as a Youth Advisor, Sunday School Teacher and helped coordinate the Middle District COB Heritage Fair Quilt Auctions at Camp Blue Diamond.

Emma Jane was a member of Martinsburg Booster Association and Iron Masters Country Club. She was the first woman to serve on the Morrisons Cove Memorial Park Board of Directors and also served as the secretary for 5 years. Emma Jane volunteered for Meals on Wheels and at The Park, where she helped serve fundraising dinners and assisted in the construction of Acorn Cove playground. She also served as president of the Martinsburg Civic Club for the last 17years of its operation and received the 1980 Citizen of the Year Award from the North Woodbury Grange. Emma Jane served as the co-chairman of the Martinsburg Area Community Fund in 1976, chairwoman in 1977 and in 2009 was selected by the Martinsburg Area Community Guidance Council to serve with her husband, Bill as honorary Co-Chairperson for the Community Fund.

Friends will be received from 2-5pm, Sunday, December 4, 2016 at Memorial Church of the Brethren, Martinsburg. A funeral service will be held at 11 am, Monday, December 5, 2016 at the church, Pastor Joel F. Nogle officiating. Interment will be held at Spring Hope Cemetery, Martinsburg.
