Gary L. Nelson, 70, Martinsburg formerly of Carlisle, passed away Tuesday morning, October 16, 2018 at Homewood at Martinsburg.

He was born in Carlisle, son of the late Edgar and Esther (Mellott) Nelson.  On November 30, 1968 he married Mary Elizabeth Nelson in Distant, PA.

Surviving are his beloved wife of almost 50 years, residing at Homewood at Martinsburg; 2 sons: Christopher Scott Nelson of Asheville, NC and Ian Matthew Nelson (wife, Heather) of Oxford, OH; and a grandson, Samuel Scott Nelson.

Gary was a 1968 graduate of Big Spring High School, Newville.  He received his Bachelor of Science degree in English from Shippensburg University and also earned a Masters of Arts degree from the Pennsylvania State University.

He retired as an English Teacher from Tussey Mountain High School with 30 years of service.  Gary also served on the board and as president for the Martinsburg Community Library.

Gary loved spending time with his family, especially his grandson, Samuel and also enjoyed biking, hiking, reading and traveling.

A private graveside service will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg, Pastor Suzanne Morelli officiating.

Memorial contributions in memory of Gary can be given to Martinsburg Community Library, 201 S. Walnut St., Martinsburg, PA 16662.
