George R. Gilbert, Sr.

George R. Gilbert, Sr., 82, of Martinsburg, passed away Thursday evening, November 14, 2024, at Conemaugh Nason Medical Center, Roaring Spring.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Derwin D. Gilbert and Nina M. (Lansberry) Gilbert-Donnelly. On October 1, 1966, he married Martha A. “Martie” Piper in Winchester, Virginia.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Martie, of 58 years; a son, George R. Gilbert, Jr. (Tina) of Fishertown; a daughter, Shari L. Gilbert (Carrie) of Waynesboro; two grandsons: Joshua W. Gilbert and Lucas-Jon Gilbert; and four siblings: Derry Gilbert, Tim Gilbert, Irene Garman; and Billy Donnelly.
He was preceded in death by three siblings: Betty Litz, Phillip “Lyn” Gilbert; and Bill Gilbert.
George attended Altoona High School and later completed his GED. He was a U.S. Army Verteran, serving in Germany from 1959 to 1962, attaining the rank of Private. Following his military service, he worked as a shift supervisor for Electro-Coatings Industries in Chicago. After moving back to PA, he worked for both Feather Petroleum, Martinsburg and at Seton, Saxton. In 2006, George started his own business, “Mr. G’s Heating,” which he still currently owned and operated.
He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Martinsburg, where he formerly served as an usher. George was also a member of the Murrary-Appleman American Legion Post 147, Roaring Spring, Hollidaysburg Sportsman Club, Martinsburg Sportsman Club, Bavarian Aide Society, Altoona, and served as an Ambassador for the Relay for Life.
George loved spending time with his family, especially traveling with them to silhouette competition shooting events and also enjoyed hunting and bowling.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 pm, Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Martinsburg and from 10 to 11 am, Wednesday, November 20, 2024, where a funeral service will begin at 11 am, Pastor Traci Marriott officiating. Interment with military honors will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg. Arrangements are by John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg.
