George H. Wineland, 91, a resident of Homewood at Martinsburg, formerly of rural Roaring Spring, passed away late Friday morning.

He was born in Martinsburg, son of the late George Brumbaugh and Josephine (Hershberger) Wineland. He was first married to Audrey Blattenberger who passed away in December of 2002, and has been married to the former Joan V. Donaldson for the past 24 years.

Surviving are his wife of rural Roaring Spring; 2 daughters: Connie Wineland (Robin) of Washington DC and Cathy Long (Larry) of Ormond Beach, FL; a son, George (Jinni) of Hollidaysburg; 5 grandchildren: Nathan, Katie, Dan, Zach and Seth; and 6 great-grandchildren: Owen, Griffin, Selah, Judah, Micah and Avery.

He was preceded in death by 3 sisters: Alice Evelyn Meadows, Lucille Honsaker, and Lois Brown.

Following his graduation from Morrison Cove High, George attended Juniata, Swarthmore, and Dartmouth colleges as well as Columbia University. He then served his country in the U.S. Navy for 2 years in the South Pacific theater during World War II. After the war, George returned to Martinsburg and became a third generation partner in his father’s contracting and hardware business, continuing until his retirement in 1997.

He was a founding member of Iron Masters Country Club, played baseball in the Blair and Twilight Leagues, was a PIAA basketball official for many years along with membership in many other community organizations.

George was a lifetime member of Memorial Church of the Brethren, Martinsburg where he was active in the church choir as well as serving on many church boards.

George enjoyed singing at community events, golf, Penn State football, Pirate baseball and nearly all sporting activities.

At the request of the deceased there will be no public viewing. A private memorial service will be held at a future date. Interment will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg. Arrangements are by John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg.

The family prefers memorial contributions to be given to his church, children’s hospital of your choice or Doctors Without Borders.
