Gladys E. Shaner

Gladys E. Shaner, 100, resident of Homewood at Martinsburg, formerly of Julian St., Martinsburg, went home to be with her Lord late Thursday morning, December 24, 2015 at Homewood.
She was born in Curryville, daughter of the late John R. and Elsie (Beach) Mock. She married Chester L. Shaner on May 30, 1942, in Curryville. He preceded her in death on July 14, 2009.
Surviving is a sister, Peggy A. (Harold) Metzler of Goshen, IN; 12 nieces; 7 nephews; and many great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by 3 sisters: Helen Metzler, Marjorie Mock and Mary Hall; and 3 brothers: Donald, John E. and Richard.
Gladys was a 1935 graduate of Woodbury High School and in addition, a graduate of Juniata College Elementary Education program.
She began her teaching career in the elementary schools at Bellwood, Lakemont and Saxton and then Gladys started teaching in the Spring Cove School District for 35 years at the Taylor and Benson schools.
Gladys was a member of Memorial Church of the Brethren, Martinsburg, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, VBS teacher, deaconess and a quilter. She and her husband Chet wintered in Nokomis, FL, for 30 years, and while in Florida, became affiliated with the Venice/Nokomis Methodist Church as well.
Gladys enjoyed ballroom dancing at the Oriental Ballroom in Gallitzin, sewing, quilting, needle point, and any type of crafting and playing cards, especially pinochle. She treasured spending time with family and friends at her cottage at Cypher Beach, along Yellow Creek in Bedford County. Gladys was always willing to give of her time and to lend a hand to her family.
Private burial will be held at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery, Altoona. Friends will be received from 3 until the 4pm memorial service, Saturday, January 16, 2016 at Homewood at Martinsburg Chapel, Rev. Jerry McCuller Jr. and Pastor Joel F. Nogle officiating.
The family prefers memorial contributions be given to the Martinsburg Community Library or the Home Nursing Agency Hospice (Bedford County).
