Grace L. Smith-Callihan

Grace L. Smith-Callihan, 87, a resident of The Village at Morrisons Cove, Martinsburg, formerly of New Paris, went to her heavenly home Saturday morning at The Village.
She was born in New Paris, daughter of the late Charles F. and Rosie L. (Felix) Custer. Grace was twice married, first to Wilson I. Smith on May 28, 1947 in New Paris, he preceded her in death on April 18, 1974. She then married Daniel Glenn Callihan on May 12, 1988 in Fincastle, VA and he preceded her in death on November 14, 2012.
Surviving are 3 daughters: Joyce A. Yingling (Jerry) of Roaring Spring, Rose Mary Campbell (Larry) of Haleyville, AL, and Kathleen G. Kensinger (Ernie) of rural Martinsburg; a son, Kevin W. Smith (Jeff Wisdom) of Poolesville, MD; 9 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 2 brothers: Ralph (Ann) of Worthington, and Douglas of Schellsburg; 4 step-daughters: Sandra Miller, Sheila Bentley, Sarah “Sally” Corle, and Stacy Shaffer; and numerous step grand and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by 2 sisters: Loretta Nunamaker and Shelvy Cessna; a brother, Ronald Custer; a step-son, Stephen Callihan; and a step-daughter, Sharon Dibert.
Grace was a 1945 graduate of Schellsburg-Napier High School. Following graduation she was employed as a kitchen and laundry aide at the Morrisons Cove Home for the Aged, Martinsburg. Once married, she was primarily a homemaker and a dairy farmer’s wife. Grace was employed and retired as a nurse’s aide at Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring.
She was a member of Dunnings Creek Church of the Brethren, New Paris and also attended Smithfield Church of the Brethren, rural Martinsburg.
Grace enjoyed reading, quilting, canning, gardening, traveling and listening to music.
A public graveside service will be held at 2 pm, Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg, Pastor James W. Snyder officiating.
The family prefers memorial contributions be given to the Martinsburg Community Library, your local library or the charity of your choice.
