August 21, 1923 – October 1, 2018

Helen M. (Hoover) Garner, 95, Martinsburg, formerly of Saxton, passed away on Monday, October 1, 2018, at Homewood at Martinsburg after a brief illness.

She was born on August 21, 1923, in Henrietta, the daughter of George D. and Edith M. (Steele) Hoover.  She married Donald Paul Garner on January 1, 1944.

Surviving are a daughter, Marilyn Dawn Horton of Clearwater, FL, and a son, Jeffrey L. Garner and wife Beth of Martinsburg; three granddaughters, Amy Garner Carpenter,  Lorene Horton Schwaninger and husband Reinhard, and Jane Garner Hoenstine and husband A-J; one grandson, Larry Horton and wife Leona; and nine great-grandchildren, Tatiana, Brigitta, and Karina Schwaninger, Jane Carpenter, Jeffrey and Jay Hoenstine, and Charlie, Henry, and Larry Horton.

A sister, Marilyn (Hoover) Feather, a brother, Rodger S. Hoover, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

She was proceeded in death by her husband, her parents, and a grandson-in-law Robert (Bob) Carpenter.

She graduated from Morrison’s Cove High School in 1941.  During World War II, she worked in the offices of the Oakite Products Company, in New York City, and also in the offices of the Glenn L. Martin Company, in Baltimore, MD.  She later worked as a teller for the First National Bank of Saxton and retired from there after twenty-five years of service.

She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Martinsburg and a former member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Saxton and the Saxton United Methodist Church.

She and Don lived life to its fullest, enjoying family, friends, and traveling.  Helen was an excellent cook, preparing many family dinners, especially for holidays.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 5, 2018, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Martinsburg beginning at 9:30 am until the hour of the funeral.  The funeral service will be held on Friday, October 5, 2018, at 11:00 am at St. Matthew, Reverend M. Suzanne Morelli presiding, with interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Matthew Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 115 East Penn Street, Martinsburg, PA  16662 or the Homewood Benevolent Fund, 437 Givler Drive, Martinsburg, PA  16662.
