Ione Ruth (Davis) Hammaker

Martinsburg

Ione Ruth Hammaker of Martinsburg, formerly of Roaring Spring, passed away on November 8 at Homewood Living Martinsburg. She was 94.

Ione was born in Roaring Spring, the oldest daughter of David J. and Grace E. (Peightal) Davis. She married Cyrus Adam Hammaker, Jr., “the boy next door” in Altoona, on January 10, 1953.

Ione graduated from Altoona High School in 1949 and from the Philipsburg Hospital School of Nursing in 1952. After decades of nursing, she returned to school and in 1982 received a Bachelor of Science in Professional Arts from Saint Joseph’s College in Maine. Ione spent most of her nursing career at Nason Hospital in Roaring Spring where she held the positions of Intensive Care Supervisor, Medical and Surgical Supervisor, Director of Quality Review and Risk Management, and Administrative Supervisor. She retired from Nason Hospital in 1991.

Ione and Cy took up square dancing in their retirement and enjoyed dancing with the Chimrock Square and Round Dance Club and the Railroaders Square Dance and Campers Club. They were also active members and past presidents of the Pennsylvania Square and Round Dance Federation.

Ione was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and sang in the choir for many years. She was a talented seamstress and quilter, and was a member of the Calico Quilters of Blair County. Ione was a past president of the Martinsburg Business and Professional Women’s Club and was on the board of the Martinsburg Community Library for many years. She loved to read, do crossword puzzles, and travel.

Ione was preceded in death by her husband, Cy; sisters Nancy Hamil and Arlene Edmundson; son, David Gayle Hammaker; and son-in-law, Jay Levrio.

She is survived by three children: Paul Cyrus and wife Wanda of Martinsburg, Carol Ann and husband Mark Radomski of Maryland, and Mary Beth Levrio of Pittsburgh; and seven grandchildren: Jared Hammaker, Corey Hammaker, Lucas Hammaker, Charlotte Radomski, Julia Radomski, Miles Levrio, and Emma Levrio.

A memorial service will be planned in the near future.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Martinsburg Community Library.
