James F. Crittendon Jr., 80, Oakdale Road, Martinsburg, passed away Wednesday, evening, February 3, 2016 at Homewood at Martinsburg, following complications of hip surgery and other chronic illnesses.

He was born in Bay City, TX, son of the late James F. and Ruby Ellen (Baker) Adams. He married Gladys Jane Ritchey on August 10, 1957 at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Martinsburg.

Surviving is his beloved wife of 58 years of Martinsburg; a daughter, Janna Lynne Crittendon of Scituate, MA; a son, David Paul Crittendon of Marlborough, MA; and 3 grandchildren: Rachel Marie, Kyle James and Claire Grace.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother: Dorothy Ann (Crittendon) Sonka, Dolores Elaine (Crittendon) Brumley, and James Gordon Adams.

James was a graduate of Bay City High School, TX and received numerous technical certificates from the U.S. Air Force while stationed at Air Bases in the U.S. and Germany.

He enlisted in the USAF in October of 1953 in Houston, TX, and served through 1965 while stationed at Air Bases in the U.S. and Germany, including the 1st Radio Relay Squadron at Ramstein Air Base and the 822nd Tactical Missile Squadron at Sembach Air Base; and achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant (E6) during the time when promotions were uncommon. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Occupation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and numerous other longevity service awards.

After serving in the USAF, James was employed at Ritchey’s Dairy, Martinsburg, the Spring Cove School District as a bus driver, and was self-employed in Martinsburg.

James was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Martinsburg. He enjoyed hunting, golf, tennis, reading and spending time with his grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 1pm until the 2pm, public memorial service and tribute, Sunday, February 28, 2016 at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 117 E. Julian St., Martinsburg, where a reception will follow at the church. Pastor Mary Hendricks and Rev. Jerry McCuller Jr. will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be given to the American Cancer Society, American Pain Society, or the United Services Organization.
