Jean E. Hoover, 95, Martinsburg, passed away late Thursday at her daughter’s home in Fort Mill, SC, where she had lived the last 3 years, following an extended illness.
She was born in Martinsburg, daughter of the late Gaius Emmert and Laura Maud (Garver) Replogle. On November 29, 1942 she married Robert L. Hoover in Altoona and he preceded her in death on March 27, 1977.
Surviving are 3 daughters: Carolyn J. Kennedy (Stan) of Martinsburg, Rosalyn H. Gates (Jeryl) of Fort Mill, SC, and Marilyn H. Imler (R. Dale) of New Enterprise; a son, Robert D. (Brenda) of Raleigh, NC; 6 grandchildren: Chris and Matt Gates, David and Scott Suiters, Nicole (Suiters) Sampson and Ryan Hoover; a step-grandson, Michael Kennedy; 8 great-grandchildren; and 2 step great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Daniel Lee Suiters, 2 brothers: her twin, Jesse Eugene and Merle; and 2 sisters: Marguerite Biesecker-Detwiler and Grace Ammerman.
Jean was a 1938 graduate of Martinsburg High School and a 1941 graduate of Bob Jones College School of Business, currently the Bob Jones University.
She retired in 1985 from the Martinsburg Borough Office with over 23 years of service and had formerly worked at Teeter’s Restaurant and Leidy’s Home Furnishings both in Martinsburg. Jean also was employed for the Administrative Department at the former, Hollidaysburg State Hospital.
Jean was a member of the Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church, Daughters of the American Revolution (Adam Holliday Chapter), Blair County Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Bob Jones University Alumni Association and also attended the Martinsburg Senior Center. She was an original member of the Central High School Band Parents Association. She was also a charter, life member and past president, secretary and treasurer of the D. Merl Tipton VFW Post 43 Ladies Auxiliary, Martinsburg.
She enjoyed volunteering at Homewood at Martinsburg and The Village at Morrisons Cove and also liked to knit, crochet, and collect cook books and light houses. Jean also loved traveling and was privileged to visit the Holy Land, Switzerland, the Bahamas, the New England states, Hawaii and many places in Pennsylvania.
Friends will be received from 6-8 pm, Thursday, July 28, 2016 at Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church and from 10 am until the 11 am, funeral service, Friday, July 29, 2016 at the church, Pastor Robert A. Russell and Pastor Brian L. McCall officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
