John M. Shoemaker

John M. Shoemaker, 99, of New Enterprise, passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2026 at his home. He was born on October 31, 1926 in Woodbury; son of the late Andrew Jesse and Ina (Miller) Shoemaker. On November 10, 1948 in Winchester, VA he was united in marriage to Helen L. (Foor) Shoemaker.

John grew up as a farmer and then a carpenter. In 1963, he started as custodian for the Northern Bedford County School District. John retired after 25 years and substituted for 11 additional years. He was a faithful member of the Woodbury Church of the Brethren. John enjoyed watching sports of Northern Bedford, Penn State, Steelers, and Pirates with his family.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Helen on January 18, 2004; 3 brothers: Orville (infant), Carl, and Lloyd Shoemaker; and 3 sisters: Ida Cogan, Vera Shoemaker, and Sara Reighard. Surviving is son, Larry Shoemaker of State College; daughter, Joyce Shoemaker of New Enterprise; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received on Thursday, March 5, 2026 from 4:00-7:00PM at the Woodbury Church of the Brethren and one hour prior to the service on Friday. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, March 6, 2026 at 11:00AM at the church; Pastor David Scott officiating. Interment will be in Dry Hill Cemetery – Woodbury.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions in John’s name may be made to the Woodbury Church of the Brethren.

The family would like to thank the workers and staff of Gentiva Hospice for the care they rendered John.
