Kenneth J. Irvin Sr., 92, Williamsburg, formerly of Newton Hamilton, Altoona and Hastings, FL passed away Friday evening at UPMC Altoona.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Charles N. and Mary I. (Smith) Irvin.  In 1956 he married Shirley J. Helsley in Cumberland, MD and she preceded him in death on July 29, 1985.

Surviving are a son, K. James of Ocala, FL; 3 daughters: Gloria J. Hale (Teddy) of Palatka, FL, Melinda J. Flaig (Jim) of Williamsburg and Michelle D. Simmons of Defuniak Springs, FL; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Richard Irvin of Hastings, FL.

He was preceded in death by 6 sisters: Naomi Palmer, Ruth Myers, Mary Eardley, Mildred Burrell, Thelma Rupert and Sarah Mazza; and 5 brothers: William, Paul, Charles, Frank and Leroy.

Kenneth was a 1942 graduate of Altoona High School.  He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving from 1943-1945 in the 433rd Medical Collecting Company attaining the rank of Private First Class.  During his service Kenneth was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal and European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, with 5 bronze stars.

He retired as a foreman from a cabbage and potato farm in Hastings, FL, and had previously worked as a supervisor for the Altoona Shoe Factory and as a ticket collector for the Pennsylvania Railroad.

Kenneth was a member of the Bonner-Sollenberger American Legion Post 456, Williamsburg.  He enjoyed watching the Price is Right and all sports; however his true love was baseball.

Friends will be received from 5-8pm, Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Williamsburg.  A funeral service with military honors will be held 11 am, Thursday, January 12, 2017 at the funeral home, Pastor Paul R. Campbell officiating.  Private interment will be held at New Canoe Creek Cemetery, rural Hollidaysburg.

The family prefers memorial contributions be given to Bonner-Sollenberger American Legion Post 456, 1325 Yellow Springs Dr., Williamsburg, PA 16693.
