Lester Max Long, 103, of Martinsburg, passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at Homewood Living – Martinsburg. He was born on June 15, 1923 in Mount Union; son of the late R. E. and Ella (Grove) Long. On October 10, 1953, in Henrietta, he married Shirley Jean (Detwiler) Long; she preceded him in death on February 17, 2025.

Lester was a graduate of Mount Union High School. He served his country as a member of the United States Navy during World War II, stationed on the USS Cockrill, DE-398. Lester retired after 28 years of employment with New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc. as a truck driver. He was a longtime, active member of Diehl’s Crossroads Church of the Brethren, where he served on numerous church boards and participated in the choir. Lester was founder of the local Destroyer Escorts Navy Chapter and member of the VFW. Lester loved his God, life, family, and cats. He was an avid bowler of 70+ years.

Lester was preceded in death by his brothers: Ken Long, Fred Long, Earl Long, and Harold Long. Surviving are son, David R. Long (Patty) of Richmond, VA; son, Timothy S. Long (Juanita) of New Enterprise; daughter, Paula Lee Weber (Sam) of Rowlett, TX; grandchildren: Zachary Long, Tyler Long, Andrew Long, Scott Long, Jennifer McCoy, Rachel Weber, and Eric Weber; as well as 9 great-grandchildren.

At Lester’s request, no services will be held. Private inurnment will be held at Diehl’s Crossroads Church Cemetery, Martinsburg.

If so desired, memorial contributions in Lester’s name may be given to Diehl’s Crossroads Church of the Brethren (2631 Henrietta Rd., Martinsburg, PA 16662).
