Louis J. Ponder

Louis J. Ponder, 88, rural Roaring Spring, passed away Thursday afternoon at the Pittsburgh VA Medical Center.
He was born in Mars Hill, NC, son of the late Louis P. and Raymonde (Gloire) Ponder. He married Patricia J. Smith, who preceded him in death on November 4, 2008.
Surviving are 4 daughters: Myrtle A. Green, Wanda Dabbs, Hassie Honeycutt (husband, Mike) all in North Carolina, and Jennifer Claar (husband, Mike) of Roaring Spring; 4 sons: Louis F. (wife, Audrey), James W. (wife, Lisa) all of Roaring Spring, Sheldon Smith Sr. of Martinsburg, and John Smith in North Carolina; 24 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; a great great-grandson; a sister, Elizabeth Clayton of Mars Hill, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Kay Gillis; and 2 grandsons: Michael Ponder and Jonathan Green.
Louis was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in WWII in the Pacific Theater.
He retired as an independent truck driver, after more than 40 years of service.
Louis enjoyed gardening, fishing, and taking his dog, Cody for car rides.
Friends will be received from 2 until the 5pm funeral service, Sunday, July 5, 2015 at John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg, Pastor Phillip J. Waite officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Blair County Veterans Honor Guard.
The family prefers memorial contributions be given to the Wounded Warrior Project.
