Martin Leonard Sheehan
July 5, 1950 ~ October 13, 2022
Marty L. Sheehan, 72, of Duncansville, passed away peacefully October 13, 2022 at his home with family and friends by his side following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Leonard D. and Mary Jo (Nairn) Sheehan. On May 15, 1971, Marty married Sherril A. McDaniels at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Coupon.
Marty is survived by his beloved wife, Sherril of 51 years; his daughter, Bonnie A. Young (Tyrus) of Duncansville; his son, Shaun M. Sheehan (Khara) of Port Matilda; four grandchildren: James P. Sheehan, Owen R. Sheehan, Margaret A. Young and Gillian R. Young; two sisters: Mary Lynn Monaghan (Drew) and Eileen S. Burkett; and his loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Timothy J. Sheehan.
Marty was a 1968 graduate of Penn Cambria High School. He then went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering from the General Motors Institute of Technology in Flint, MI. He began his career as an engineer at Oldsmobile in Lansing, MI, where he and Sherril began their married life together.
During his lifetime, Marty worked as an engineer, car salesman and for many decades was an entrepreneur. As brothers, Marty and Tim were partners in business first opening the Dodge dealership in Cresson in 1983 and later Sheehan’s Mini Market in 1987. For the past two decades, Marty owned and operated Sheehan Motors, including a John Deere franchise, and Sheehan’s Car Wash.
Marty enjoyed attending local sporting events, St. Francis basketball games and could often be found at a soccer field, scouting event or dance recital with his grandchildren. Marty loved his dogs, most recently Chandler and Bandit, was a dedicated “Wheel Watcher” and rarely missed an episode of Jeopardy. He enjoyed reading, listening to music and playing card games, including his hand-held solitaire game.
Marty will be fondly remembered by family and friends as a loving father and proud Pap, as well as for his dry sense of humor and ability to fix nearly anything. Marty and Sherril spent countless summers on Raystown Lake with family and longtime boating friends where he was known to some as “Supafly!”
A “Celebration of Life” service will be held at 5:00 p.m., Saturday, October 22, 2022 at Grace Fellowship Church (Leamersville Campus), Duncansville, with a reception to follow at the church recreation center. Private interment will be held at St. Francis Xavier Church Cemetery, Cresson. Arrangements are by John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg.
