Mary A. (Hess) Wingerd

Mary Arlene Wingerd (Hess), 94, of Mechanicsburg, passed away on May 19, 2019 at Messiah Village. She was born in Lancaster Co., daughter of the late Henry M. and Lottie (Hersh) Hess. On January 30, 1965, she was united in marriage with Titus “Tim” M. Wingerd, he preceded her in death on August 12, 2008. Mary was Brethren in Christ in faith. She was an elementary school teacher and reading specialist. Through her reading specialist career, she helped many children succeed in reading. She enjoyed reading, knitting, playing games, and traveling. Mary was an active member of the Mobile Missionaries Assistance Program (MMAPS) for 14 years. During this time, she and others did numerous projects renovating Christian facilities such as youth camps, churches, and parsonages. They traveled all over the country as volunteers in their own RV as did the others they worked with. She was preceded in death by her husband Titus; step-son Nathan Lynn Wingerd; brother Paul Hess and wife Esther; sister Elizabeth Asper and husband Norman; and sister Lois Weaver and husband Gerald. Surviving are son Nelson Wingerd (Janel) of Albuquerque, New Mexico; daughter Melinda Ridley (Dave) of Belen, New Mexico; sisters Rhoda Heisey and Anna Ruth Hostetter; as well as 4 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Friends will be received on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 from 3:00-3:30PM. At 3:30PM a Celebration of Life service will take place with Pastor Debbie Bentch officiating.
