Mary K. Smith

Mary Kathryn Smith, 91, of Martinsburg, went home to be with her Lord, Friday afternoon, December 27, 2024, at her home.
She was born in Taylor Township, rural Roaring Spring, daughter of the late Franklin C. and M. Edith (Metzler) Kauffman. On June 30, 1951, she married R. Leroy Smith at the Clover Creek Church of the Brethren, Martinsburg.
Surviving is her beloved husband, Leroy of 73 years; two daughters: Cynthia K. Nell (Carl) of Dillsburg and Debra A. Byler (Jim) of rural Martinsburg; six grandchildren: Ben Byler (Tara), Annie Rupp (Matt), Aaron Byler (Julie), and Kathryn Byler, Chris Nell and Mary Beth LeValley (Jason); 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Albert “Bucky” Kauffman of Martinsburg.
Mary was preceded in death by two brothers: Gene and Don Kauffman.
She was a 1951 graduate of Morrisons Cove High School, Martinsburg. Mary and Leroy owned and operated the Martinsburg Laundromat. She took great pride in keeping their business spotless.
Mary was a longtime, active member of Clover Creek Church of the Brethren, where she was a lifelong deacon and taught in the youth department. She also served as an election poll volunteer for many years.
She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mary also enjoyed cooking, sewing and gardening. Even with her health declining, she still planted a vegetable garden this past summer and has passed on her passion for gardening to her family.
Friends will be received from 11-1pm, Friday, January 3, 2024 at the Clover Creek Church of the Brethren, rural Martinsburg, where a funeral service will begin at 1pm, Pastor Duane Crumrine and Pastor Barbara Hammond officiating. Private interment will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
