Mary Alice Sauer, 90, passed away Thursday morning, at Homewood at Martinsburg, following an extended illness.

She was born in Martinsburg, daughter of the late Clarence L. and Isabel B. (Bice) Smith.  She married Eugene E. Sauer on January 28, 1964, in Washington D.C.

Surviving are her beloved husband of 52 years residing in Altoona; and three sisters: Helen P. Roller of Williamsburg, M. Golda Smith of Martinsburg, and Nancy M. Miller of Woodbury.

She was preceded in death by 4 brothers: Emmert W., Donald F., Clarence L.  Jr. “Lefty” and Homer E.; and 4 sisters: S. Margaret “Peggy” Hoover, Shirley A. Knepp, Naomi  W. Slagenweit, and Virginia W. Fortney.

Mary Alice was a 1943 graduate of Morrisons Cove High School, Martinsburg where she was valedictorian and editor of the school paper.  She was a life-long member of the Curryville Church of the Brethren.

In 1944, she entered into duty with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C. During her service with the FBI, she worked in D.C., as well as with the Embassies in Mexico City and Paris, France.

In 1963, she transferred from the FBI to the House of Representatives where she served as Administrative Assistant to the Chief of Surveys and Investigative Staff of the House Appropriations Committee until her retirement in 1973. After 1973, she worked as a consultant for 12 years for that Staff, at the Health, Education, and Welfare building (now HHS), the Pentagon, the Department of Agriculture, and the Forrestal Building.

Friends will be received from 11 am until the noon funeral service, Saturday, May 28, 2016 at John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg, Pastor David R. Stiles officiating.  Private interment will be held at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery, Altoona.

The family prefers memorial contributions be made to Curryville Church of the Brethren, 1535 Curryville Rd., Curryville, PA 16631.
