Maurice “John” Baker 78, of Roaring Spring, passed away Wednesday, June 10, 2026 at his residence. He was born in Roaring Spring, a son of the late John Dale and Florence E. (Knisely) Baker. On June 13, 1970 at the Foot of Ten Bible Church he married his wife of nearly 56 years, Cynthia (Stitt) Baker. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children: Bradley Baker and wife Nichole, of Tyrone, Brandon Baker and wife Rachel, of Rockford, OH, and Janell Yingling and husband Barry, of Curryville; 9 grandchildren: and two sisters: Mary Detwiler, of Altoona, and Willa Saylor, of Newburg. He was preceded in death by a brother Marvin Dale Baker.
John was a 1966 graduate of Northern Bedford High School and attended DeVry Technical Institute. He served in the US Air Force from 1969 until 1973 as an Air Traffic Control Specialist, receiving his Honorable Discharge at the rank of Sergeant while stationed at Lockbourne AFB. When he returned home, he was employed at E.F. Smith Trucking, HRB Singer, and lastly Conrail at the Juniata Locomotive Shop. John retired after 31 years as a railroad electrician and crane operator. He was an extraordinary turkey hunter who recorded over 100 harvests throughout his life. John also enjoyed hunting whitetail deer, fishing with his grandchildren, puzzles, and playing board games with the family. For many years the US Flag flown on the mountain in the Loysburg Gap was maintained by John. He and his wife Cindy enjoyed over 37 years of membership at the Faith Baptist Church, in Altoona.
Friends will be received on Sunday, June 14, 2026 from 1:00 pm until the 3:00 pm service at the Fink & Stone Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., Woodbury, with Dr. Gary G. Dull officiating. Private interment at Dry Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Faith Baptist Church Missionary Fund, 315 40th St., Altoona, PA 16602
