Melvin R. Clapper

September 25, 1931 — February 10, 2016

Melvin R. Clapper, 84, of Martinsburg, went to be with his Lord on February 10, 2016, at Select Specialty Hospital in Johnstown. He was born on September 25, 1931 in New Enterprise, the son of R. Harvey and U. Mae (Mountain) Clapper. Melvin was preceded in death by his wife Patricia A. Teeter on September 27, 2011. Surviving are two sons; Allen G. of Bradenton, FL and Rodney G. of Woodbury; and daughter Wanda Black of Portage.  Also surviving are four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, five step great-grandchildren, and one step great-great grandchild. He was a Korean War Veteran having served in Yokohama, Japan and was a member of the Alma Lodge I.O.O.F., 523 in Johnstown. Melvin was a meat cutter by trade having been employed by ACME Market in Altoona and Ed’s Riverside in Martinsburg. He later retired on January 1, 1996 from Homewood at Martinsburg as Maintenance Supervisor. He was a member of the Woodbury Church of God having served as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, and was on the Official Church Board for many years. Melvin loved playing country and gospel music and enjoyed restoring antique automobiles and stringed instruments. Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 14, 2016 from 2:00PM-5:00PM at the Woodbury Church of God. A Funeral Service with Honor Guard will be held on Monday, February 15, 2016 at 11:00AM at the Woodbury Church of God. Pastor Charles Riley will officiate. Visitation will take place the hour before service. Interment will be at Dry Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Woodbury Church of God.
