Nelson L. “Rusty” Irvin

Nelson L. “Rusty” Irvin, 93, Williamsburg passed away Tuesday afternoon at his residence.
He was born in Williamsburg son of the late Jesse M. and Lillie (Parks) Irvin. On July 16, 1943 he married Betty L. Lynn in Williamsburg. She preceded him in death on April 28, 2013 with nearly 70 years of marriage.
Surviving are 2 daughters: Cindy Michelone (Jerry) of Homer City and Marsha Williams (Ron) of Williamsburg; 4 grandchildren: Jeffrey Michelone (Nancy), Jeremy Michelone (Amy), Rob Stultz (Tammy) and Michelle Welch; 5 great-grandchildren: Juliana, Caitlynn, Hunter, Kara and Rylee; a loved one, Mark Welch; several step grand and great grandchildren; 3 siblings: Helen Loose, Jesse “Pud” and Donald all of Williamsburg; and many special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Bill Stultz; a brother, Melvin; and 3 sisters: Beatrice Shock, Bernice Mock and Lucille Detwiler.
Rusty was a 1943 graduate of Williamsburg High School and received his associate degree from the Zeth Business School, Altoona.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving in the 504th Parachute Infantry, 82nd Airborne Division in the European Theater, where he was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Service Star and attained the rank of Private First Class.
Mr. Irvin was a member of the Williamsburg Church of the Brethren, Bonner-Sollenberger American Legion Post 456, Williamsburg and the Williamsburg VFW Memorial Post.
He retired as an Assistant Post Master in 1973 from the U.S. Post Office, Williamsburg with 30 years of service.
Rusty loved hunting and fishing with his family, especially fishing trips to North Carolina and sitting in his hunting stand built by his grandsons and friends, that he called his “hotel”. He also enjoyed watching and supporting his grand and great grandchildren in all their activities and visits with his physician, Dr. Mitchell Joseph.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8pm, Friday, November 11, 2016, at the Williamsburg Church of the Brethren and from 10 am until the 11am funeral service, Saturday, November 12, 2016 at the church, Pastor Lee D. Saylor and Chaplain Tim Guyer officiating. Interment with full military honors will be held at Shellytown Fairview Cemetery, rural Williamsburg.
Memorial contributions in memory of Rusty can be given to the Williamsburg Ambulance Club or Southern Care Hospice.
