Owen Verne “Shorty” Michael Sr., 81, a resident of Presbyterian Village at Hollidaysburg formerly of Olivia Village, Tyrone and Martinsburg, passed away early Friday morning at the Presbyterian Village.
He was born in Martinsburg, son of the late Herman H. Sr. and Margaret (Stock) Michael. On January 16, 1959 he married Eleanor M. Swoger in McKees Rocks. She preceded him in death on September 11, 2006.
Surviving are 2 daughters: Elizabeth “Betsy” Ickes (Richard) of Duncansville and Janice Michael of Rochester, NY; 3 sons: Owen V. Jr. (Helen) of Pittsburgh, Robert (Kim) of Tampa, FL and Patrick (Mary) of Harrisburg; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters: Louise Hall and Margaret England; and a brother, David.
He was preceded in death by 3 brothers: Terry, Howard and Herman Jr.; and a sister, MaryAnn Albright.
Owen was a 1953 graduate of Morrisons Cove High School, Martinsburg and a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a radar technician. He was employed as a union electrician and worked as an electrician for most of his working years.
As a younger man, he enjoyed sports cars and motorcycles, and one of his lifetime hobbies was building and flying model airplanes. After his retirement, Owen enjoyed making and designing jewelry from beads and riding his Harley Davidson. He also loved talking and spending time with his friends at the Roaring Spring YMCA.
Friends will be received from 5-8pm, Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg. A funeral service will be held at 11 am, Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at the funeral home, Pastor Joseph H. Furry Jr. officiating. Private interment will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
The family prefers memorial contributions be given to the Roaring Spring YMCA, 820 Grove St., Roaring Spring, PA 16673.
