Robert Glenn Carpenter

Robert “Bob” Glenn Carpenter, 47, of Pittsburgh, passed away on November 2, 2016, at his family’s home in Squirrel Hill.
He was born on August 29, 1969, in Pittsburgh, the son of H. Glenn Carpenter, Jr., and Mary Jane (Scheidhauer) Carpenter of Edgartown, Massachusetts. He married Amy Margaret Garner of Martinsburg on May 5, 2001.
His wife survives along with their daughter, Jane; his mother and father; his brother William and his wife Ellen of Falls Church, Virginia; his mother- and father-in law Beth and Jeff Garner of Martinsburg; his sister-in-law Jane and her husband A-J Hoenstine and their sons of Martinsburg; his aunt and uncle Jean and John Baker of Denver, Colorado; and his aunt Cheryl Scheidhauer of Mercer.
He was preceded in death by his aunt Carolyn Walker and uncle Ernest R. (Mike) Walker of Johnstown and uncle John Scheidhauer of Mercer.
He graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School in 1987 and from the College of Wooster in 1991. In high school and college he was an actor, singer, artist, and radio disc jockey. After college he worked as a counselor with the developmentally disabled on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. After returning to Pittsburgh in 1994 he worked in the city in political and non-profit fundraising, the development office at the University of Pittsburgh, and in business financial services.
He was devoted to his wife and daughter and was an active resident of the Squirrel Hill neighborhood, where his family and their basset hounds live. Bob was a car enthusiast who enjoyed driving his old blue Mazda Miata in the hills of Western Pennsylvania and displaying it at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. He was an enthusiastic and self-taught cook who specialized in spicy, smoked, and slow-cooked food. Bob cared about the marginalized of society, worked for social justice, and identified with those outside the mainstream. He will be remembered as a good friend, brother, son, husband, and father.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30pm Sunday, November 6, 2016, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Martinsburg, with the Rev. Edward Harshbarger and the Rev. Timothy Knauss officiating. A memorial service and gathering will be held later this fall in Pittsburgh.
