Rodger S. Hoover

Rodger S. “Bacon” Hoover, 97, of Martinsburg, passed away Thursday evening, December 26, 2024, at Homewood at Martinsburg.
He was born in Henrietta, son of the late George D. and Edith (Steele) Hoover. On September 11, 1948, he married Hazel M. Over in Roaring Spring. She preceded him in death on September 2, 2019 following 71 years of marriage.
Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Debra Hoover of Hollidaysburg; three grandsons: Justin Colin Hoover of Hollidaysburg, Andrew Bacon Hoover (Debby) of Billings, MT and Travis Steele Hoover (Kiley) of Martinsburg; and a sister, Marilyn A. Feather of Martinsburg.
He was preceded in death by a son, L. Colin Hoover; and a sister, Helen W. Garner.
Rodger was a graduate of Morrisons Cove High School, Martinsburg, and a 1950 graduate of Pennsylvania Military College with a degree in Political Science. He served in the U.S. Army as an aviation cadet. Rodger also served in the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Vincennes, in New Caledonia in the South Pacific during WWII.
He was employed for 42 years at New Enterprise Stone & Lime Company, retiring in 1992 as Vice President, Secretary, and Chief Financial Officer.
Rodger was a member of St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, Martinsburg, where he served as president of church council. He was also a member of the D. Merl Tipton VFW Post 43, Martinsburg, a 73 year member of the Woodbury Lodge 539 F&AM, Roaring Spring, where he served as Worshipful Master in 1959, and the American Kite Flyer’s Association.
He loved spending time with his family, gardening, and tending to his tree nursery and orchard. Rodger also enjoyed hunting, fly fishing and skiing.
Friends will be received from 10-11am, Tuesday, December 31, 2024 at St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, Martinsburg, where a funeral service will begin at 11am, Rev. Traci Marriott officiating. Interment with military honors will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
Arrangements are by John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Rodger may be given to the D. Merl Tipton VFW Post 43, 115 S. Nicodemus St., Martinsburg, PA 16662.
