Sherman A. Croft

Sherman Alton Croft, 95, of Martinsburg, passed away Friday evening, November 22, 2024, at Homewood at Martinsburg.
He was born in Roaring Spring, son of the late Frank and Nellie (McGee) Croft. On August 11, 1950, he married Bette Louise Showalter at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Roaring Spring.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Bette of 74 years; three sons: Kirby R. Croft (Beryl) of Elizabeth, Kent L. Croft (Maria) of Asbury Park, NJ, and Kraig A. Croft (Yasuko) of Cibolo, TX; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Deanna Kurtz of Roaring Spring.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Croft; and two sisters: Carol Riley and Joanne Hileman.
Sherman was a 1946 graduate of Roaring Spring High School. He attended Finley College, OH for a year, where he wrestled and played football; he earned a bachelor’s degree in teaching from Lock Haven University, where he wrestled, played football and participated on the track team. Sherman later received his Masters Degree and completed his Principal Certification from the Pennsylvania State University.
He began his career as a health and science teacher at Robertsdale High School, where he helped guide the football team to their longest unbeaten streak. Sherman also taught for many years at Central High School, Martinsburg, where he coached basketball and wrestling and later retired as principal from the Roaring Spring Elementary School.
Sherman was a member of St. John’s Reformed Church of Christ in Martinsburg. He served as the first manager for the Hershberger Memorial Pool at the Morrisons Cove Park, Martinsburg and as Board President for the Martinsburg Community Library.
He loved spending time with family and wintering with Bette in Myrtle Beach, SC. Sherman also enjoyed hunting, fly fishing, boating at Raystown, attending Penn State sporting events and volunteering at the Country Store at Homewood at Martinsburg.
Friends will be received from 11:30am until 1pm, Tuesday, November 26, 2024 at the Bice Memorial Chapel at Homewood at Martinsburg, where a funeral service will begin at 1pm, Rev. Jerry McCuller Jr. and Rev. James Neatrour officiating. Private interment will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
Arrangements are by John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg.
