William A. Flaig, 81, Williamsburg, passed away Monday evening, January 2, 2017, at Homewood at Martinsburg following an extended illness.

He was born in rural Williamsburg, a son of the late Robert Martin and Sara C. (Rabenstein) Flaig. On November 6, 1959, he married Veronica K. Norris in Cumberland, MD. She preceded him in death on January 5, 2014, after 54 years of marriage.

Surviving are a daughter, Katrina Y. Saylor (Samuel C. II) of Williamsburg; 3 sons: Derek W. (Debbie) of Altoona, Erick C. (Amy) and Robert F. Sr. (Rosemary), all of Williamsburg; 9 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert of Tyrone; and 3 sisters: Helen Black of Tyrone, and Verna Verbonitz and Ruth Reneker, both of Williamsburg.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James Flaig; and 3 sisters: Violet Evans, Sara Chamberlain, and Mary Peace.

William attended Williamsburg High School and also attended the one room school house, Orchard Grove School, in Shellytown , rural Williamsburg, only to find himself and his family living there for the next 55 years.

William served in the Army and was stationed in West Germany.  He was employed at Westvaco Corp., Williamsburg, and retired in 1990 following 25 years of service.

He loved running his favorite beagles, Annie and Orchard Grove Lady, at the Beagle Club, and he raised and sold pedigree beagle pups.  William loved the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Penn State football all of his life. He enjoyed rabbit hunting, doing puzzles like cryptograms and crosswords, and was an expert gardener.

William was a member of the United Paperworkers Union, where he served as president for approximately 8 years.  He was also a member of the Williamsburg Beagle Club.

Friends will be received from 5-8 pm, Thursday, January 5, 2017, at the John K. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Williamsburg. A funeral service will be held 11 am, Friday, January 6, 2017, at the funeral home, Pastor Elizabeth A. Hess officiating. Private interment will follow at the Presbyterian Cemetery, Williamsburg.

The family prefers memorial contributions be given to the Williamsburg Beagle Club, c/o John R. Traxler, 625 W. 1st St., Williamsburg, PA 16693.
